Niantic has announced its next game, Peridot — a real-world augmented reality (AR) mobile game that lets you raise virtual pets.
The game’s release date hasn’t been revealed yet, but the announcement states Peridot will enter a soft-launch beta testing phase soon “in select markets”.
You can pre-register for the beta test and get the latest updates on the game’s development on Peridot’s website.
Peridot involves breeding, raising, and caring for mystical creatures of the same name (Dots for short).
Like Pokémon GO, Peridot will involve players using their smartphones to explore the real world using their Dots.
Dots will be able to recognise various terrains by using Niantic’s AR technology, with each terrain type allowing Dots to forage for different items.
Niantic is also working on implementing a weather-dependent system, which will alter your gameplay experience based on the detected weather pattern.
Players will have to complete daily tasks, including feeding, petting, and walking their virtual pets. Notably, if a player neglects these duties, there will not be any negative consequences like the untimely demise of your Dot.
Peridot will allow players to team up to breed new Dots, creating babies with unique characteristics, abilities, and appearances.
Breeding will require players to navigate to a Point of Interest in the real world, but Niantic has included elements that do not need this, like training and petting.
According to IGN, Peridot will feature a large selection of microtransactions that can speed up gameplay, among other things, like enabling your Dots to grow faster.
An imaginative new friend. A story that’s completely yours. Peridot, a real-world adventure pet game where you raise, care for, and breed one-of-a-kind adorable creatures. Pre-register today to stay up-to-date on our development! https://t.co/mMAQke9HiB pic.twitter.com/0RT5FRXC5G
