City of Heroes changes into free-to-play suit

22 June 2011

Superhero MMOG City of Heroes will be saving the world for free later this year, with publisher NCSoft moving the game over to a free-to-play/freemium subscription model.

“Freedom is about getting more content into the hands of our players, whether they are subscribing or playing for free,” says executive producer Brian Clayton.

“To do this, we’ve looked at City of Heroes from the ground up and focused on three ways to enhance the experience by giving our players more choices, greater rewards and the best content we’ve ever produced. And for the first time ever, players can choose to enjoy more than seven years of content for free.”

Obviously, the free version has some restrictions – players won’t be able to change alignment, have no access to the Day Jobs or Mission Architect systems, and can have a maximum of two characters per account.

An optional premium subscription – now dubbed VIP Status – will include free Signature Story Arcs, as well as 400 Paragon Points each month.

The game will also be rebranded as City of Heroes Freedom, and a major update is in the works.
