It costs R1.7 million to max out a character in Diablo Immortal

6 June 2022

Diablo Immortal hasn’t been out long, but those who’ve been playing the game have already noticed its unhealthy monetisation scheme. YouTube channel Bellular News found that it would cost players $110,000 (R1.7 million) to max out a character.

Diablo Immortal may be a Free to Play game but to fully maximise a character’s effectiveness requires the purchasing of Legendary Gems to unlock endgame tier progression – something that currently can only be done via the games monetisation options.

Buying these Legendary Gems to max-out a character does not guarantee that you receive the items you are looking for, as they only have a chance of dropping from the loot boxes you will be paying for.

Bellular News also noted that it would theoretically take ten years of playtime to fully equip a character in the game’s current state without spending any real money.

Thus far, Diablo Immortal’s general gameplay loop and performance have been well-received by players, but this has been tempered by a healthy degree of scepticism over the game monetisation.

If Bellular News’ calculations are accurate, this scepticism will have been well-founded.
