Amazon shipping out PS Vita in January

23 June 2011

Looks like there’s been a bit of inter-office miscommunication – while Sony has been refusing to divulge an exact launch date for the new PS Vita, Amazon has gone ahead and told its customers that the handheld is releasing on 31 December, and shipping out at the beginning of January (via Destructoid).

As recently as two weeks ago, Sony was saying that the Japanese earthquake had “significantly impacted” the company’s schedule, although the PS Vita was expected to hit retail around the holiday season.

“There’s a very good and sensible reason why we haven’t clarified exact timing in regions and geographies – we were significantly impacted by the events of March 11 in Japan,” said Sony’s European prez Andrew House told GamesIndustry.biz at E3.

“We’ve undertaken, across Sony but also SCEE, a significant assessment of impact on our supply chain and what we think the long or medium term impact is going to be. Once we’ve completed that assessment and have a full understanding of what our supply chain looks like then we’ll be in a position to be more specific about launch in specific regions.”
