Starfield’s 1,000 planets will be procedurally generated

15 June 2022

In an interview with IGN, Todd Howard has confirmed that the 1,000 promised explorable planets in Starfield will use procedural generation.

Howard added that while procedural generation is being used, Starfield has the most handcrafted content of any Bethesda game yet, with over 200,000 lines of dialogue.

Bethesda’s Starfield reveal at the Xbox Games showcase received a mixed response – some fans were overjoyed, while others were more reserved in their feedback

This comes as no surprise given the sheer amount of content that is required to handcraft this many areas.

It was also revealed that Bethesda has entered into pre-production of the Elder Scrolls 6 and is planning to develop Fallout 5 afterwards.

This would put a potential release date for both games many years away, given Bethesda’s average development cycle.

Howard has promised that going forward, we should expect a deeper dive into how the procedural generation works.
