A YouTuber called Lord Nazo, real name Nick Minor, is being sued for sending out nearly 100 fraudulent DMCA takedown requests on behalf of Bungie to Destiny 2 YouTubers.
Bungie said it investigated the matter for several months and has learned that Minor had created a new Gmail address that mimicked the address syntax of official Bungie takedown claims.
He then used this fake address to send out 96 false DMCA claims to Destiny 2 content creators, which Bungie alleges caused severe financial and reputational damage to the company alleges Bungie.
“Ninety-six times, Minor sent DMCA takedown notices purportedly on behalf of Bungie, identifying himself as Bungie’s “Brand Protection” vendor in order to have YouTube instruct innocent creators to delete their Destiny 2 videos or face copyright strikes, disrupting Bungie’s community of players, streamers, and fans,” said the lawsuit. “And all the while “Lord Nazo” was taking part in the community discussion of “Bungie’s” takedowns, spreading disinformation,”
Bungie adds that the actions of Minor caused “significant reputational and economic damage.”
Bungie’s lawsuit against Minor is for $7.6 million, which it attributes in part to spending considerable resources to track Minor down.
