Bandai Namco, the publisher behind Dark Souls and Elden Ring, has allegedly been hacked and is being held for ransom by ALPHV — a group known for ransomware-as-a-service and data breach attacks.
According to vx-underground – a Twitter account that tracks malware – the ALPHV (aka BlackCat) ransomware group hacked Bandai Namco by breaching the company’s network security and claims to have successfully “ransomed” the publisher.
Bandai Namco isn’t the first gaming company to have fallen victim to these attacks, as Capcom was hacked in 2020, followed by CD Projekt Red and Electronic Arts in 2021 and Samsung and Nvidia in 2022.
These attackers aren’t usually focused on the publishers’ games in particular, but rather on any data that would have high resale value on the black market.
Bandai Namco has yet to officially confirm or deny this attack.
