You can now buy a PlayStation 5 in South Africa from R12,499, while the high-end PlayStation 5 Pro can cost as much as R21,000 depending on where you shop.
The PlayStation 5 was released in 2020. In South Africa, the recommended retail price for the Digital Edition was R9,999, while the version that came with a disk had a recommended retail price of R11,999.
At launch, the console was incredibly difficult to buy thanks to huge demand and a lack of supply.
This is no longer the case, but pricing has increased substantially since the launch prices were announced, owing to factors like inflation and the global technology shortage.
These prices also fluctuate between retailers, making it important to shop around when buying a new console.
South Africans buying a PlayStation 5 in 2026 have three configurations to choose from.
The base version, now called the PlayStation 5 Slim, comes in two models – one with a disc drive and another that’s purely digital.
These are the two models that were available at launch in 2020.
The third option is the PlayStation 5 Pro, which boasts higher base specifications and is only available as a digital console.
If you desperately want to play physical copies of your favourite games, you can buy an external Disc Drive add-on, with certain bundles including one by default.

PlayStation 5 lifespan
If you are holding off buying a PlayStation 5 because you would rather buy the next-generation console, you will be waiting for a long time.
Sony announced in November last year that it was extending the lifespan of the PS5 beyond the traditional seven years.
It also confirmed that the PlayStation 5 is currently still in the middle of its lifespan and that they intend to support it for years to come.
The PlayStation 5 has been available for six years, so these statements suggest it will be the primary Sony console into the 2030s.
