Minecraft 1.7 will be going live sometime today (30 June 2011), depending on which area of the globe you reside. The 1.7 update is not the ‘Adventure Update’ previously discussed by developer Markus Persson; that has been pushed back to version 1.8 due to its scope.
According to developer Jens Bergensten, the 1.7 update will include pistons, shears, redstone/repeater fix, fences on fences, and new cobblestone and clay textures. It will not include the new lighting system.
While the other improvements are definitely welcome, the new pistons are quite compelling, as they introduce the ability to displace a block by one space. The creative implications of this will likely be vast for those who like to experiment with the more complex machinations of Minecraft.
A video celebrating the introduction of pistons in Minecraft 1.7 gives some insight in the potential for this new gameplay element.
