Angry Star War Galaxies players threatening to sue Sony

30 June 2011

Sony might be planning to close down the Star Wars Galaxies servers in December, but they’re not going down without a fight. Not the cool kind of fight with lasers and X-Wings and AT-ATs and stuff, though, just a regular boring 21st century fight with bits of paper. They just don’t make fights like they used to, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.

According to a report on VentureBeat that has subsequently been removed (via Kotaku), a bunch of angry players are planning to file a class action lawsuit against Sony, but not – as you might expect – to keep the game open, or at least not directly.

Apparently since the announcement of the game’s closure, fans have been petitioning on the forum to turn the game into a microtransaction-supported free-to-play MMO, and their efforts have been locked down because “promoting an online petition causes disruption within the community and does not provide gameplay feedback that our development team can use”. Of course, so does closing the games servers, but that’s another matter altogether.

The chances of this class action lawsuit getting anywhere are probably close to just about zero, however, since forum users did sign one of those pesky end-user licence agreements that Sony loves so much.

The saga continues.
