News broke yesterday that, according to a leaked GameStop memo, the incoming PS3 “K” models would no longer support high definition output via component cable. Turns out it’s not true. Not quite, anyway.
Sony has confirmed that while HDMI will now be required for Blu-ray playback – in compliance with the AACS Final Adopter Agreement regulations – console owners would still be able to use a component cable for everything else.
“The reports aren’t accurate,” SCEA PR Manager Al De Leon tells IGN. “The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards. PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content.”
So, to sum it all up then:
• If you already own a PS3, disregard all of this.
• If you’re planning to buy a PS3 exclusively for games, disregard all of this.
• If you’re planning to buy a PS3 to game and/or watch Blu-ray discs, you’ll be adding an HDMI cable to that shopping list.
