Xbox set to be bestseller of 2011

16 July 2011

Microsoft has thrown down the gauntlet to Sony and Nintendo, and confidently claimed it will be top of the pile come the end of the year. Not just in the US – but globally.

This bold claim comes in the wake of the NPD report for June, which shows that the Xbox has once again come out ahead with 507,000 units sold for the month. Microsoft was quick to point out that that figure is almost double the amount of units sold by its current-generation competitors.

Microsoft however, had even more impressive stats on hand.  In the United States, the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console for 12 of the last 13 months. The company also pointed out that while console sales have generally slowed down over the summer, the Xbox 360 looks poised to have the biggest year in history – an impressive feat considering it is in the 6th year of its lifecycle.

With a final twist of the blade, Microsoft cited the $350 million expenditure in the US on Xbox related products such as software, hardware and other accessories – the most of any console.

Ouch, looks like the competition have some catching up to do for 2011.
