PSA: Today’s Xbox system update does nothing special

19 July 2011

Sometime today, the techs over at Xbox HQ will be deploying a system update, but it won’t be changing anything obvious.

So what’s the point?

According to Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, the update adds “no new features”, but it’s “preparation for additional system enhancements coming to Xbox 360 later this year”. Whatever that’s supposed to mean. Expect to see a rollout of complaints tomorrow about “modified” consoles getting banned from Xbox LIVE again, perhaps.

At its press conference at E3 last month, Microsoft did make some announcements about its incoming (new) New Xbox Experience dashboard update, which will bring live TV, UFC, YouTube, and the company’s own Kinect-supported Bing searching service to the console in some territories, although a launch date for that has not yet been confirmed.

The Xbox is also supposed to be getting cloud storage for game saves and Gamertags, and recent reports claimed the service had already gone live, although Microsoft later denied this, saying “We’ll keep you posted on launch details.”
