Battlefield 3 to sport in-game advertising

24 July 2011

According to Gamersbook, EA DICE’s Daniel Matros has confirmed that Battlefield 3 will feature in-game adverts on multiplayer maps.

Matros did not formally announce of explain how the adverts will work, but after a community event in Germany he tweeted “One of them was knifed and said. “Hey, i was checking out this cool in-game ad”.

It is unclear what sort of products will be advertised in Battlefield 3, but it will not be the first time EA dips into the world of in-game advertising. US president Barrack Obama became the first presidential candidate to purchase in-game advertising, when he appeared on outdoor banners in Burnout Paradise.

However EA’s Ben Cousins has since claimed that in-game advertising doesn’t work, telling The Escapist back in December that he’s “not convinced that we’ll have billboards in games and things like that. Maybe those days are over.”

EA has yet to provide any official comment on Battlefield 3’s implementation of in-game advertising.
