Modern Warfare 3 info: 1v1 maps, sniper lobbies, more

28 July 2011

German gaming site Tweakers.net recently conducted an interview with Infinity Ward community manager Robert bowling, in which a variety of interesting details about the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 were discussed.

Bowling kicked off the interview describing the design goals behind the development of Modern Warfare 3, saying that the current priority with the single player component is to deliver rich urban environments and large levels while maintaining a 60 frames per second frame-rate. The 60 frames per second could probably be construed as a subtle dig at Battlefield 3’s highly publicised 30 frame per second frame-rate lock. Bowling described the 60 frame per second requirement as “key to the Call of Duty experience, being very fast paced and cinematic.”

When asked about criticisms that Call of Duty is due for a massive engine overhaul, as well as complaints that Battlefield 3 is a much better looking game, Bowling said the design philosophy behind Modern Warfare 3 is to improve the core gameplay experience. Once Infinity Ward is happy with the gameplay the team will work on improving immersion and fidelity, with improved lighting effects and so on.

When discussing Call of Duty Elite, Bowling iterated that it will be an optional service, and that players will not lose anything by not using it. He also stated that players will not be able to purchase items which grant them advantage in-game, and that Elite will have a built in system to take care of cheaters and hackers.

Bowling also mentioned that Infinity Ward is working on a system which rewards players better for pursuing objectives, instead of simply playing for kills. When asked about kill streaks and complaints that they are over-powered in Modern Warfare 2, bowling had this to say:

“From a design philosophy point of view we’re really looking at building from that Call of Duty 4 base. How can we get back to that fast paced gun on gun infantry focused combat where it’s more about you and your weapon and your load out and how you’re contributing to the game and your team, more so than relying on air support.”

The interviewer asked Bowling about piracy, and whether Infinity Ward would follow other publishers and consider releasing the PC version at a later date to maximize console sales. Bowling replied saying that “piracy is something that happens,” and that “we don’t want to punish the legitimate customers.” He also said that the developer has no plans to release different versions of the game at different times.

“In Modern Warfare 2 we learned a lot about what our PC audience is looking for in the game, and we want to incorporate as much of that feedback as we can moving forward,” said Bowling.

Bowling also confirmed that quick scoping will return in Modern Warfare 3, and that there will be “dedicated sniper lobbies”. Also, there will be smaller maps that are suitable for 1-on-1 play, as well as changes to the melee system, which Bowling did not elaborate on.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is due for release on 8 November, 2011, and will be released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
