True Crime: Hong Kong now has its second shot at the big time, following Square Enix’s recent move to acquire the rights to the game from Activision, who cancelled the game earlier a few months ago.
“When we first saw and got our hands on the game we fell in love with it,” Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton tells Gamasutra.
“It’s one of those games where you don’t want to put the controller down; it’s what we call ‘sticky’,” he says, citing the project’s “incredible new game engine, rich new story with deep and complex characters, and gameplay features which have simply never been seen at this level in an open world game”.
The publisher has not actually acquired the True Crime IP, however, so they’ll be changing the game’s name, although Singleton adds that it’s “too early” to say what that might be. Real-Life Felony, maybe?
The game was originally expected to launch on PC, Xbox, and PS3 in November, but Square Enix is “not talking about release timings or formats at this time.” So expect it to launch on this, that, and the other one sometime whenever instead.
