Port Royale 3 announced

3 August 2011

Kalypso Media has revealed that Port Royale 3 is in development by their internal studio, Gaming Minds. The game will be cast in the familiar mould of economic management simulation and real-time strategy. It is scheduled for release in Q2 2012 for Windows PC and consoles.

The first Port Royale appeared in June 2003 earning a solid 79/100 on Metacritic. The sequel followed in September 2004, posting a respectable 75/100 on Metacritic. Fans of the series and genre alike will no doubt be hoping that Port Royale 3 surpasses these benchmarks. The first two titles were only available on PC, so it will be interesting to see if the series can satisfactorily transition to consoles.

Port Royale 3 will be playable at Gamescom 2011 and MyGaming will be sure to report back on the progress and potential of the game. Our first look at the game comes in the form of two screenshots, which are dotted around this article.

Port Royale 3, will provide gamers with an adventuring choice of playing as a heroic captain, villainous brigand or savvy merchantman. Players will sail through the Caribbean during the turbulent 17th century, where the naval powers of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands all fight for supremacy in the colonies. Players take on the role of a young captain trying to build fortune and reputation in the new world colonies.

Gameplay modes

The campaign consists of two different paths for the young protagonist to follow: adventurer and trader.

Following the path of the adventurer will lead the player on a naval conquest where they must gain notoriety through raids, piracy, bounty hunting, plundering and conquering cities as they strive to build their new Caribbean empire.

The route of the trader sees the player using their economic know-how to become the most powerful trading tycoon in the New World by setting up trade routes, building production facilities and developing cites.

In free-play mode, players can experiment with combining the two campaign gameplay types into their own custom adventurous path of accumulating wealth and power.

In addition to the single-player campaign Kalypso promises “there will be robust multiplayer modes where players can go head-to-head using commercial, economic and conquest simulations to allow for fast-paced gameplay.”
