Star Wars: The Old Republic will be limited on release

20 August 2011

Bioware’s much anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic, or SWTOR if you’re l337, is finally approaching release, due out later this year. If, however, you’re one of those who are counting the days, you may want to get your pre-orders in ASAP.

A Bioware representative at Gamescom has explained that the game will actually have limited copies available at launch. This is due to EA’s concerns that servers may become overloaded by the initial surge of people trying to connect simultaneously.

While the representative did admit that there is an exact number in mind, Bioware isn’t telling right now.

A lot of popular games have had server problems at launch, so this could be seen as a smart move by EA. One can’t help feeling a little bit cheated however, in that perhaps it should be EA’s responsibility to make sure that their servers are capable of handling the load, rather than forcing anxious gamers to “wait their turn”.
