Borderlands 2 multiplayer deathmatch? Maybe.

28 August 2011

Gearbox’s smash-hit new IP Borderlands hit the gaming community like a hurricane, and the world is anxious for another crack at the RPG-FPS mishmash with graphics like a child’s watercolour – myself included.

The original game’s multiplayer was almost entirely co-op based, friends and strangers were able to band together to battle the game’s various odd villains and loot the planet. However, if there was ever an argument over who really deserved the rare sniper rifle with the sick stats, a duel arena was available to settle the score.

This time around however, Gearbox has acknowledged the possibility of a bona fide deathmatch multiplayer mode. Talking to Nowgamer, Gearbox was asked if they’d ever considered the traditional deathmatch style for Borderlands.

Somewhat noncommittal, this was their response: “Yeah, we did. It’s something that we’re still thinking about and we’re not talking about any aspects of that yet. We already smashed two genres together to create one so let’s not get too ahead of ourselves [laughs]. It really eats into our development time to make the main core game as solid as possible.”

Is multiplayer deathmatch something you’d like to see, or do you think there just isn’t a place for it? Personally, I could get on board with dune buggy Capture the Flag.
