DICE explains Battlefield 3 vehicle combat

5 September 2011

The latest Battlefield Blog post gives us a detailed look at just how vehicles will work in Battlefield 3.

One of the most hyped features of Battlefield 3 is the inclusion of jet fighters. Not only will the skies be littered with helicopters, but we can expect an array of fighter jets constantly roaring through the air. Then of course there are the land vehicles. Altogether there will be 20 vehicles spread accross 12 classes. These classes include armoured transports, infantry fighting vehicles, main battle tanks, scout helicopters, attack helicopters, fighter jets, and attack jets. “Whatever your choice, we let you fine tune almost every vehicle in Battlefield 3 to fit your play style, the current map, and the current situation,” reads the Battlefield blog.

Not only will there be a wider scope of vehicles than in previous Battlefield games, but there will also be a deeper vehicle customization system than ever before. “In the Russian fighter jet, do you go with anti-air missiles to dogfight enemy air targets, or would you rather mount a handful of laser guided air to ground missiles as your secondary weapon to harass opposing tanks? Do you equip it with IR flares to avoid missiles, or would you rather take your chances with the fire extinguisher in case you get hit?”

An interesting new design tweak whereby vehicles heal themselves automatically with time will also be introduced. Of course, engineers will still be able to repair vehicles, but the auto-repair is designed to give non-engineers a more sustainable role when operating them. Once a vehicle dips below a certain damage threshold it will not repair itself, and an engineer will be necessary patch it up. Damaged tanks will also behave differently, slowing down, spewing smoke and in some cases losing mobility altogether.

Immobile damaged vehicles will make things easier for engineers trying to make repairs, and they will no longer have to chase a damaged tank repairing it as it roars towards enemy lines as is often the case in Bad Company 2.

“The new vehicle customization and gameplay refinements in Battlefield 3 are subtle game-changers. Add them to our already proven rock/paper/scissors formula and you have the recipe for our most dynamic and exciting online warfare experience ever,” reads the Battlefield blog.
