Portal now free on Steam

16 September 2011

If you are one of the six remaining PC gamers who do not own Portal, then you’re in luck, because Valve has gone ahead and made it available for the fantastic price of $0.00.

Previously $19.99 (+-R140), anyone can download the game for free until 20 September. Thereafter it will presumably once again be $19.99.

The promotion is being run to raise awareness for Learning With Portals, a campaign directed at increasing the use of Portal in classrooms.

“Today, innovative educators are finding ways to incorporate Portal and Portal 2 into their classrooms – helping teach physics and critical-thinking skills,” reads the Learn With Portals site.

“One of the biggest challenges in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math is capturing the students’ imaginations long enough for them to see all of the possibilities that lie ahead.

“Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, math, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun which gets us one step closer to our goal – engaged, thoughtful kids!”

Portal has become an icon in the video games industry. Often praised for its unique gameplay and quirky personality, Portal currently sits on a Metacritic score of 90/100. If you don’t yet own the game, then you have until Monday to grab it for free from Steam.
