Activision worries about CoD losing momentum

While it seems nothing can stop the money-pooping juggernaut that is the Call of Duty franchise, the high-ups have admitted that they worry about the series losing momentum “all the time.”

Talking to Gamerzines, Sledgehammer Games’ CEO Glen Schofield says, “Absolutely, we talk about it all the time.”

He insists however, that it’s all about keeping things fresh: “That’s why it’s all about innovation. We’re fans of (the game) so we know where we want to take it, we know what would make us happy, and we are listening to other fans out there.”

While it may be a concern, Schofield seems confident, saying, “But you know what, it’s not (losing momentum) right now, it’s growing. You can see it out there. It’s so big, people love it and I get so many tweets from the community. It’s the biggest thing in entertainment. You stay paranoid because things can happen, but staying paranoid actually makes your game better.”

It’s no surprise that Activision must feel a little worried, not necessarily about their upcoming release, but future releases. DICE themselves has said they’re not aiming to outright beat Call of Duty in sales come November, it’s all about stealing market share.

With another big shooter to contend with, Call of Duty could certainly be in danger of losing some ground. With a new title every year for the last five years, one can’t help feel the IP has to run out of steam eventually – certainly that was the case with the smash-hit Guitar Hero franchise.

At the moment however, things are looking good, with Activision’s last two Call of Duty titles breaking sales records. With the amount of hype and excitement surrounding the upcoming release, we can reasonably expect those records to be broken again, despite Battlefield 3’s competition.
