Cliff Bleszinski upset by 8/10 Gears scores

18 September 2011

It’s an interesting scenario we’ve come to when a review score of 8/10 has a developer up in arms. Certainly, throughout my life I’ve never been sad to see an 8/10 stamped on anything I’ve produced. This could be a result of the continued inflation of review scores, something I certainly have discussed before.

This is the way things are now, however, and Gears of War 3 creator Cliff Bleszinski is upset by some “low” scores from the likes of Eurogamer, Destructoid and The Escapist – “low” being 8/10, because everyone knows if your game doesn’t hit the 90s, it may not be worth buying.

“You know, I didn’t quite gather it. I don’t want to come across as defensive.  How do I phrase this properly? When people rated Gears 2 higher than Gears 3, it kind of upset me because I know Gears 3 is a better game on every level,” said Cliff.

The few criticisms directed at the game revilve around a lack of originality, with Eurogamer noting that the campaign’s pacing was “dulled at too early a stage.”

Cliff stands by the title though, insisting that the longer development time has made it a far superior game to the original two.

“We’ve embraced Gears 1’s strengths, learned from Gears 2’s weaknesses, and hit a sweet spot between the two. Honestly, I think that’s the gist of it all.”

Customers will get their chance to judge for themselves come September 20th, but given the blockbuster name and a Metacritic score currently sitting at 91, we can be certain sales won’t exactly be modest.

One has to wonder if Cliff isn’t being a little petty complaining about a handful of 8/10s, with an average score still sitting in the 90s.
