Blizzard reckons Diablo III would be pretty cool on console

22 September 2011

While Blizzard has remained infuriatingly coy about console versions of Diablo III, it’s probably about 99.9% unofficially official by now, and really just a matter of time until they announce that ‘yes, lol, it’s totally happening’, and everybody pretends to be really, really surprised.

In the meantime then, we’ll just play along while Blizzard talks about the “idea of Diablo III on console”, instead of the much less subtle “Diablo III on console”.

For the moment, it’s all about how well the game might, hypothetically, play with a controller.

“One of the reasons why we’re exploring the idea of a console version of Diablo III [is] because we feel that the controls and the style of the game lend itself to a console”, game director Jay Wilson told PC Gamer.

“With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I’ve been ‘Oh this feels even better, with direct control…'”

Hey, and it’s not just for console gamers either.

“I can pretty much guarantee that if we decide to do a console version that we will look to support a pad on the PC,” he adds. “But initially with release I don’t think we’ll be ready.”

Diablo III is currently in a closed beta, and may or may not get a real launch date at BlizzCon next month.
