PC game sales to exceed console game sales by 2014

22 September 2011

According to research group DFC, if the games industry continues to evolve in the direction it’s going now, PC game sales will exceed console game sales by 2014.

Nvidia cited the research findings in a presentation about some of its upcoming projects and the general state of PC gaming.

As expected, the growth of PC gaming is being driven by the growth of digital platforms such as Steam, which DFC believes will continue to fuel growth over the next three years, whereas console game sales are expected to dip slightly.

A large component of the sales growth cited in the research findings is attributed to World of Warcraft subscriptions, which account for roughly 10 million people paying around $15 per month just to keep playing.

Free-to-play games like League of Legends and Worlds of Tanks were mentioned, and it is well documented that this model can be highly profitable under the right circumstances.

Gamers are reportedly spending millions of dollars on micro-transactions per year, again contributing to the growth of PC gaming.

The study even included social games such as Farmville and Magia Wars which make their publishers billions of dollars every year.
