Telkom ADSL users may get higher data caps

22 September 2011

Summary: Telkom launches 20GB, 30GB and 40GB data bundle sizes, and is rumoured to be planning higher caps on existing data packages.

Telkom announced in July 2011 that they will increase their Internet subscribers’ monthly data allowance by between 4GB and 11GB, free of charge in July, August and September 2011.

The free promotional blended data was automatically added to TelkomInternet AllAccess customers’ accounts at no additional charge.

This promotion comes to an end this month (September), but according to an internal Telkom memorandum leaked by Memeburn, Telkom’s ADSL customers may still have something to smile about in October.

Telkom to boost ADSL caps?

The memorandum states that the data caps of its current 3GB, 6GB and 10GB data bundles are being increased to 4GB, 8GB and 16GB respectively from 1 October 2011.

Telkom further looks set to phase out its current 1GB data bundles which are excluded from the higher data cap offerings.

“Channels should recommend that customers on these packages take up the 4 GB TelkomInternet R99 package. If the customer is on the 1 GB TelkomInternet R79 package, for R20 more they will receive three additional GBs every month,” the Telkom memorandum reads.

TelkomInternet has recently informed their subscribers that “Due to our constant quest to improve Telkom Internet’s services, we will be executing system maintenance. Regrettably, customers will not be able to access the Data Usage and Top Up–portals”.

This maintenance, which took place last night, may well have something to do with Telkom’s new data bundles.

It should however be noted that this information should currently be seen as speculative as Telkom did not officially confirm the information.

Telkom’s corporate communications department was contacted for feedback about the memorandum, but they did not respond to requests for information.

Larger bundle sizes

Telkom launched larger ADSL data bundles aimed at their “high volume users” earlier this month. These data packages have 20GB, 30GB or 40GB ADSL usage caps and are priced at R440, R630 and R810 respectively.

It is currently not clear whether the usage limits for these high end data packages will also be increased on 1 October (if the information about planned cap size increases for smaller bundles are indeed accurate).

According to the memorandum, Telkom will also update their Do Broadband packages to reflect the change in monthly data caps. A new Do Broadband package, called do Basic, will also be introduced.

Do Basic will offer an ADSL access speed up to 384kbps, accompanied by 4 GB of blended data (and 10GB of local only data) for R219 a month.

In related news, Telkom has extended their ‘Free ADSL’ promotion to 15 October. This offer provides new ADSL customers with DSL 1Mbps Access, 5GB of data per month, free line and internet installation and a free modem, without any commitments.
