Dota 2 launch plans drastically changed

23 September 2011

In a blog update posted today, Dota 2 lead developer IceFrog has announced some pretty big changes to the game’s rollout plan.

Valve was previously planning to continue the game’s closed beta for the next year or so, but according to IceFrog, seeing so many fans so excited about getting their hands on it has promoted them to speed things up.

“The feedback we’re seeing everywhere is that people just want to play it, even though there’s still a ton of heroes yet to be implemented. We’ve also seen that the folks who are already in the beta are chomping at the bit to show everyone else some of the fun games they’ve had. So we decided our original plan was dumb,” said IceFrog.

Instead of keeping Dota 2 under wraps until it resembles a similar stage in development as DotA, Valve is going to “get it out there as fast as we can.”

According to IceFrog, there is still a lot of work to be done in certain areas, and so the beta will remain invite-only for the time being. However, he says that this will be for a “hopefully short” period.

He has also announced that there will be no restrictions as to what players can say and post about the game while it’s in beta. So expect a lot more Dota 2 content finding its way onto the internet in the next few weeks.

If you still want to get in on the closed beta, then make sure your name is on this list.
