Bioware prepping “biggest online launch in history” for Star Wars: The Old Republic

23 September 2011

Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMOG might not have a launch date yet, but it’s got a big launch plan already. The biggest ever, maybe.

“Because of the hype around the game right now, our launch numbers are predicting something really huge, which means we have to be ready for the biggest online launch in history essentially,” project lead James Ohlen told Gamasutra.

The company is hard at work finishing up the game, which at this point in development is mostly a matter of fiddling with bits and pieces of it to make sure it all fits together properly.

“We’ve been running a lot of tests, we’re getting a lot of feedback on the game. And when we get that feedback, we use it to make tweaks and changes,” he explains.

“We’re not making major changes now, we’re just making changes that we can. Every BioWare game goes through this process, or any game in general.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic is Bioware’s first MMOG project, and has been in development for about five years.

Back in July, EA announced that the game had broken the publisher’s pre-order record, with over 200,000 reservations made in the first six days of availability.
