CDProjekt hints at Witcher 3, possible Witcher 2 expansion

25 September 2011

Speaking to Eurogamer, CDProjekt game designer and writer Jan Bartkowicz has dropped a few hints regarding the not-too-distant future of the Witcher franchise, saying that the developer still has “at least one big title ahead of us in The Witcher franchise.”

The Witcher was critically acclaimed and its sequel, released earlier this year, went on to become one of the most highly praised RPGs of recent times. While CDProjekt is currently focusing on an “overhaul patch” that will update the game to “The Witcher 2.0” and the forthcoming Xbox 360 port, it seems clear that The Witcher 3 is on the cards.

“All I can say is – outside of when the pre-production starts and finishes – with the story team we were probably in pre-production for The Witcher 3 during making The Witcher 2.”

“Just because even while we were doing The Witcher 2 it was all about, you know, there’s got to be probably something after.”

Bartkowicz was careful to cover himself, stating clearly that they are not ready to announce anything, and furthermore, when they do, it won’t necessarily be The Witcher 3. However, he does admit that “there’s probably going to be some releases in the future.”

Speaking at the Eurogamer expo over the weekend, Bartkowicz said that CDProjekt is “definitely planning something”, and that The Witcher 2.0 update will not be the last update for the game, leading many to speculate over the possibility of an expansion pack or additional DLC.

The Witcher 2.0 patch will go live on 29 September. It’s not yet known when CDProjekt plans to release the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2, but it will include all of the additional content and tweaks that will be present in The Witcher 2.0.
