Cryptic Studios has announced that its 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons co-op RPG Neverwinter has been delayed to the end of 2012, pending its dramatic reinvention as a free-to-play MMOG.
*Cryptic casts Shocking Burst!*
Actually, considering the developer’s recent acquisition by Chinese free-to-play MMOG publisher Perfect World Entertainment, this news isn’t exactly a big surprise although fans who had been looking forward to a more traditional Dungeons & Dragons RPG may roll a critical failure on this one.
According to a report over on IGN, the game will be built using a modified version of the engine currently powering Cryptic’s Champions Online and Star Trek Online MMOGs, and feature twitchy, reflex-based play.
The article also confirms that all “content packs” will be free, with revenue generated via in-game microtransactions for “consumables, vanity pets, and cosmetic items”.
It’s not clear for the moment how the change will affect the game’s character classes, skills, and whatnot, but expect to hear more about it in the coming months.
