For those of you so enjoying Space Marine you’re already thinking about the sequel, brace yourselves for disappointment.
THQ head Danny Bilson has squashed that hope in an interview with Joystiq, saying that a Space Marine sequel can’t release alongside THQ’s 2013 MMO Warhammer 40K: Dark Millenium Online.
He said, “We’ve already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play. And if you combine that it’s very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I’m not sure there’s room for Space Marine.”
It seems that may not be the only reason however, as Bilson sounds a little disappointed with the game’s sales.
The game is “doing okay,” Bilson said. “It’s a really good game, it’s doing pretty well. In this world, honestly, you have to do exceptionally well to make any money, because the games are so expensive.”
For reference, Space Marine was the tenth best-selling game in the US for September, and currently sits at 11th in the UK across all formats. As Bilson said, certainly not bad, but not exceptional either.
40K fans won’t be left high and dry however, as Bilson has assured fans that they are “heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there’s more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while.”
In the meantime, fans will have the MMO to look forward to; we should be seeing footage relatively soon, as THQ have promised Dark Millennium Online will be available to play at next year’s E3 trade show, with a very loose launch date of “somewhere between April 2012 and March 2013.”
