A few years ago, when ex-EA employees Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield formed Sledgehammer Studios, their primary goal was to develop an action adventure Call of Duty game for Activision.
However, things over at Activision HQ got a little ugly the following year when primary CoD developer Infinity Ward all but fell apart completely, losing studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampela.
As a result, Sledgehammer Games was forced to refocus on helping Infinity Ward develop Modern Warfare 3, which is due out next month. In a surprising turn, it seems that Sledgehammer will not be diverting back to its original path, with studio general manager Glen Schofield telling CVG that “We’ll probably cancel it,” and saying “They gave us the choice of: Do you want to work on Modern Warfare 3 or do you want to continue working on this? And we really liked that. We liked what we were doing. It’s third person, probably set at a time that might have ‘niched’ it too much. I bet that if we had kept going, within a month or two, I probably would have switched the time period but kept the gameplay. It had some really cool stuff.”
The game was never officially confirmed, and practically nothing concrete was known about it other than it would take place in the CoD universe and would be a third-person action-adventure.
It would seem that following the release of Modern Warfare 3 Sledgehammer will move onto a new project, with Schofield saying “I think that we will work alone on our next project,” explaining that Modern Warfare 3 has allowed the developer to hire additional staff.
“Initially, we weren’t fully functional because we had to learn a new engine. Now we have, I think the best thing that could happen for Activision would be for us to both go off and make our own game. Whether that’s a Call of Duty game or not is up in the air. I plan to continue working on Call of Duty.”
