Hey, what’s everybody doing this weekend?
Playing Free Realms, apparently – the Sony Online Entertainment free-to-play MMO adventure game now has 20 million registered users.
That’s less than 1 percent of the total world population, but when you take out of the equation all those children in Africa and Central Asia who don’t have game stations, that leaves pretty much everybody else on the planet playing Free Realms.
“This benchmark is an honour and a true testament of SOE’s success with free-to-play games,” said SOE president John Smedley in a press release.
“Free Realms delivers a truly captivating, quality gameplay experience that keeps our community engaged and continues to attract new players every day.”
The game originally launched back in 2009 for PC, with Mac and PS3 versions added in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
While it’s ostensibly free-to-play, a premium subscription is needed to progress past level four in any career, and of course there’s the usual truckload of gear sold through microtransactions.
