BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing technology that lets users upload and download files to one another over the Internet.
It allows downloaders to connect to a number of “seeds,” meaning that in an ideal case, if one uploader disconnects you don’t stop downloading. Uploaders with sufficient (and affordable) bandwidth can also seed to multiple downloaders.
Sites such as TorrentFreak regularly publish lists of the top 10 movies download using BitTorrent, while torrent trackers and indices often maintain lists of the most popular torrents on their services.
However, there is still precious little data available about the torrenting habits of South Africans.
For the last few months Torlock, TorrentFunk, and YourBittorrent have shared with us their lists of the 15 most popular torrent files in South Africa on their sites.
The below table shows which torrent files were downloaded the most from the three sites during September 2011.
