One of Battlefield 3’s biggest selling points is the inclusion of massive 64 player maps featured in the PC version. After all, bigger is more epic, and more epic is always better, right?
Well, not always.
According to EA/DICE executive producer Patrick Bach, 64 player maps were a self imposed limitation because beyond that number the game becomes less fun.
“Games are about having fun, it’s not about doing the most you can do…If we can jump two meters it must be better to jump four meters. No. 64 players is kind of the maximum where it’s still fun and you can still control the Battlefield. It’s like I can understand where I got shot from and why,” said Bach speaking to PC Gamer.
Which totally makes sense if you ask me. Having spent quite a bit of time in the Battlefield 3 beta, I struggled to come to terms with the sheer scale and pacing of Caspian Border, a massive map with up to 64 players taking part at any given time.
Sure massive, sprawling 64 player maps sound cool on paper, but do they really make for a more compelling gameplay experience?
