Earlier this month (October 2011) Apple announced their new smartphone, the iPhone 4S.
It launched on 14 October 2011 in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.
The newest iPhone is set to launch in 22 more countries before the end of the month, but that list of countries does not include South Africa.
However, a source close to one of SA’s cellular providers told MyBroadband that it is likely the iPhone 4S will be launched in SA before the end of 2011.
South Africa was part of the third wave of the release of the iPhone 4 and considering that Apple said it would launch in 70 countries before year-end, it isn’t much of stretch to believe that our operators will bring the iPhone 4S in before the end of December.
If you simply can’t wait that long then there are a number of importers already offering the iPhone 4S. The table below compares the prices of three such retailers.

- iPhone 4S
| Model | iPhone 4S 16GB | iPhone 4S 32GB | iPhone 4S 64GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expansys | R10,200 | R12,100 | R13,900 |
| The Notebook Company | R11,765 | – | – |
| CaCell | R11,900 | R13,800 | R14,600 |
In the US the iPhone 4S launched on contract at $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB model.
In the UK it is available cash-only, and a 32GB iPhone 4S will cost you £599 (around R7415) while a 64GB model goes for £699 (around R8655).
The Notebook Company’s MD, Christopher Riley, said that they were only able to get a few iPhone 4S units as they are very scarce.
He added that the price should come down to below R9,500 in the next 2 months, however.
