Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360 Slim limited to last-gen graphics

28 October 2011

Some disturbing reports are coming in from 4GB Xbox 360 Slim owners, claiming that without the extra texture disk installed, Battlefield 3 is offering up some decidedly unsightly graphics.

The reports have been given further credibility by a post on Gamesradar, in which writer David Houghton recounts his experience with the game on his own 4GB Xbox 360 Slim console.

“Wow. This we can barely believe. In fact if it hadn’t happened to me personally, I probably wouldn’t. It seems that if you’re playing Battlefield 3 on one of the new-ish 4Gb slim Xbox 360s, unless ours is a freak isolated incident (and a couple of references I’ve found on forums imply that it certainly is not), you might well be stuck with crappy last-gen (or worse) textures throughout the game,” says Houghton.

The problem lies in the fact the DICE could not fit the full high-res texture version of Battlefield 3 on a single DVD. So the game features a second disk containing higher resolution textures which the developer highly recommends users install. The problem is that owners of the Xbox 360 Slim console are not able to install the second disk.

The installation screen for the HD content states that console owners must have at least 1.5 GB of free space to install the texture pack. This shouldn’t be a problem as the Xbox 360 slim packs 4GB of internal memory. The problem, however, is that the game reads this storage space as onboard flash memory and not an actual hard drive, so is unable to continue the installation.

EA has yet to comment on the matter.
