I Am Alive is a game that has been shrouded in mystery from the moment it first dropped onto our radars at E3 in 2008.
The CG trailer back then gave no clues as to what type of game it would be, or even what it was about at all.
Then it disappeared.
Three years later, with nary a peep in between – I Am Alive appeared on the radar again, a changed beast. Well, we assume it’s a changed beast, considering we never knew a thing about it.
Previously a full-release product, I Am Alive is now going to making its debut on PSN and Xbox LIVE in 2012 – and if the trailer released in September is anything to go by – it’s going to be awesome.

What we already know about I Am Alive is that you play as a survivor of an unknown catastrophic event that destroyed an entire city (at the very least) – and that you’re looking for your wife and daughter; if they even survived.
Along the way you’ll be battling other survivors who seem intent on killing you – as well as navigating the destroyed city, making your way where you can amongst the rubble.
The lucky buggers at Gamesradar were given a sneaky hands-off preview of the game (benefits of living in the UK, I guess) and they got to see a bunch of nifty titbits that opens up the world of I Am Alive a little bit more.
In their preview they got to have a look at how serious the survival aspect of the game actually are – with stamina, health and well-being fighting against you from the inside.
So as you scale a building, you lose stamina – forcing you to find the most efficient ways to your destination.

Being a post-disaster world, Ubisoft are pushing the importance of food and resources – especially their rarity – and how that will make their use a tough decision to make.
GR also reported on the combat, describing it to be more strategic than the typical skop, skiet en donner – where you have to bide your time and wait for the right moment to attack the right target to gain the upper hand.

With the game having been surrounded with so much silence in the past, it’s good to finally see some detail coming out about it – better yet, the detail that we’re seeing is looking pretty damn awesome, too.
How the I Am Alive of old may have been, what was kept, what was thrown away – we’ll never know; but I’m certainly glad I Am Alive is, well, alive.
I Am Alive is scheduled for release next year in 2012.
