Asura's Wrath – what you need to know

2 November 2011

Publisher Capcom and Developer CyberConnect2 are promising to deliver “a fresh take on the action gaming genre” with the release of Asura’s Wrath in early 2012.

While they don’t seem to be breaking the mould on the cinematic action-adventure genre, from what we’ve seen so far, Asura’s Wrath does feature some compelling art direction and an intriguing sci-fi/Asian mythology hybrid narrative.

The Story

Long ago in the realm of Shinkoku, eight deities known as “The Eight Guardian Generals” battled to protect civilization from a destructive force known only as Gohma. During the victory celebration, the Emperor of Shinkoku is assassinated in a sinister plot and the blame is placed on Asura.

In the middle of the commotion, Asura’s wife is also murdered and his daughter kidnapped. With even his brother-in-law and rival Yasha turning against him, Asura is banished from Shinkoku.

Awoken by a voice after 12,000 years, Asura vows revenge on all those who have betrayed him.

The Game

Asura will face off against numerous distinct enemies, including planetary sized bosses. Through a mix of ranged attacks and visceral close-quarters melee, players will fill Asura’s ‘Burst Gauge,’ until he can unleash the full force of his rage.

Interestingly, Capcom has said that “Asura’s story of revenge will be told through episodic gameplay, taking the player on a journey of highs and lows and adopting a structure that is similar to a TV drama series.”

While the word ‘episodic’ might be heart-stopping for many gamers, I believe it speaks more of the ebb and flow that is being designed into the game.

Asura’s combat abilities and powers will change throughout the game depending on the narrative. When he is angry, he will wield more intense offensive abilities than when he is on the back foot.
