Sony patents biometric control designs

2 November 2011

The patent suggests that Sony may be investigating control platforms which take into account users’ vital signs while they are playing.

The concept is reminiscent of technology which Nintendo admitted to investigating in 2009, whereby it would create peripherals that monitor players’ pulses and incorporate the results into gameplay.

The application for the patent was actually filed back in December 2010, but shows diagrams for three different biometric controllers.

Two of the devices look like biometric enabled versions of the DualShock 3 controller and PlaySation Move controller, and the third resembles a handheld gaming device.

The patent description speaks of controllers which monitor players’ bio-signals and incorporate the data into gameplay.

There are a lot of potentially interesting directions that developers could run with this sort of technology, adjusting gameplay to manipulate players’ physical reactions and so on.

However, the most likely candidate for this sort of technology would sadly be fitness orientated applications and games.
