First, mainstream media caught wind of a little level in Modern Warfare 2 called “No Russian” – I’m sure you’ve heard of it, even if you’ve never played Modern Warfare.
In the level you were “part” of a terrorist group – or rather, were in deep cover with a terrorist group – and had to go along with the ride as they gunned down civilians in an airport.

Even though you didn’t have to actively take part in the slaughter – you were witness to it, and could do nothing to prevent it.
The mission was so controversial that the mission was changed in a number of countries and even removed in others – all while News sites (if one could call Fox News, “news”) hotly debated the contents of games and their effects on our children.
Well, now it would appear that Modern Warfare 3 is just going to kill them.
The children that is.
We were directed to this video by the hawk-eyed MyGaming forumites – SPOILER WARNING goes without saying.
Okay, look; what’s shown in the video isn’t the player killing a little girl – that would just be distasteful – but it does show a rather gritty, and sadly realistic situation where a little girl and her mother meet a horrific end – no rainbows, no magic resurrection potions – just a dead family.
If this proves to be legit – which it does appear to be – then it will be the second taboo that Activision are allowing out the door; no one likes to see kids dying.
With Rainbow 6 Patriot’s prototype gameplay trailer carrying similar “shocking” content, where we’re faced with witnessing difficult scenes to stomach – it would seem that the tackling of real-world situations, as depressing as they are, is going to be a continuing trend.
But is that what we want?
What next, game developers? A steam-roller driving over a group of babies?

Oh.
Are you shocked by games that show this sort of thing? Do you care? Or would you prefer the happy, prancing ponies and rainbows to give us back our happy endings?
