Every new project for software and hardware developers invariably leaves behind some kind of paper trail, and the Sherlocks of the gaming world will often manage to uncover hints of things to come from major developers. Couple this with a healthy dose of informed speculation, and companies often have their surprises ruined before they get a chance to announce them.
This is one such case, as Nintendo has filed a patent for a touchpad accessory for the Wii. The attachment would fit over the Wiimote, and would allow gamers to use a stylus to control gameplay, presumably the same system used by Nintendo’s current handheld generation. More importantly, this is in line with what will be available on the upcoming Wii U’s tablet controller.

While there is no official word, speculation is that this means Nintendo is already putting plans into action to support Wii U games on the existing Nintendo Wii. With so many current Wii owners, this could be a good plan to capitalize on pre-existing user base and ease the transition over to the new console.
