Modern Warfare 3 dedicated servers in SA

8 November 2011

By the time you read this, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will possibly be well on its way to breaking some kind of sales record, and millions of fans around the world will have started racking up their first kills.

We caught up with local gaming service providers to find out the situation with dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 3 in South Africa.

Mweb

Mweb Gaming manger Desmond Kurz explained that they are indeed planning on putting up Modern Warfare 3 servers.

However, specifics weren’t yet available as even the service providers had to wait until the game was launched via Steam before they could deploy servers.

iGame

iGame Online Manager Jonathan Smit said that there is little information coming from Activision at this point.

“There is no information available other than the releases made by Activision themselves regarding MW3 and the Dedicated Server Structure supporting it: ‘Private is about Progression, Dedicated is about Control’” said Smit in a post on the iGame forum.

This means that peer-to-peer gameplay will allow unlocks and class progression, while dedicated servers will offer unranked sessions that have unlocks available that are designated by the Administration System governing that server.

“We will attempt to unlock as far as the server software allows, but players will not gain any class experience or progression on these servers,” said Smit.

iGame is preparing to launch four servers:

iGame Hotel
iGame India
iGame Juliet
iGame Kilo

Internet Solutions

IS Gaming responded in brief by stating that they will be hosting servers, with six available at launch, and more to be added if required. Server names are yet to be determined.

Server details will be announced via the IS Gaming website, and their discussion board can be found here.

WAGE

WAGE Games Master Robert Tait also said that there is little information from Activision with which to work.

“Activision has confirmed dedicated servers for PC only; however these will be unranked allowing the server administrator to control all aspects of weapon unlocks. Unfortunately ranks will not progress in unranked mode. As mentioned by Infinity Ward Community manager Robert Bowling – “Public is about progression, private is about control.”

Tait also said that WAGE will only have further information regarding servers once the game has been launched.

“We are aiming to have around 6 servers running for the public’s enjoyment and will follow a similar trend to some of our COD4 servers. The naming convention will be similar to that of Battlefield 3 – our usual uncanny names mixed with aircraft NATO designations,” said Tait.

Tait said that WAGE expects to have servers online to coincide with the game’s launch.

“We will be communicating with the community and listening to their requirements. We will be changing server-side settings depending on demand and the flexibility of the server software. We look forward to another solid title with the community’s involvement,” Tait concluded.
