So earlier this year when Activision was trying to get us all excited about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 they announced Call of Duty Elite, a platform which was to essentially become a social network for Call of Duty players.
The free/subscription based service tracks lifetime statistics across various Call of Duty titles, includes special monthly downloadable content, and provides various social networking options.
Console apps for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions became available when Modern Warfare 3 was released, while the PC version was delayed to an unknown date. Beachhead Studios‘ head Chacko Sonny stated that the PC version needs to “Ensure a safe PC environment.”
“It’s really extensive. We need more time to get there, so Elite on PC will not launch on Day 1. We’re working our butts off to make it happen, but we won’t release it until we know that PC gamers can enjoy Elite as it’s meant to be,” said Sonny.
However, the official Call of Duty Elite twitter feed posted the following last night:
“We are working towards a universal Elite experience but we cannot guarantee if or when a version will be available for the PC.”
This is the first time an Activision representative has even suggested the possibility that PC gamers might not eventually get Call of Duty Elite.
There was a follow up post later in the evening, but it doesn’t provide very much in the way of clarity at this point:
“We misspoke. Our goal has always been to provide a free PC offering for ELITE. Stay tuned for an update as timing is still being determined.”
