Mortal Kombat dev teases ‘Unexpected surprise’

If you’re one of those Twitter-types that follows developers, you will have noticed a titillating little tweet coming from Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon, teasing his followers about an “unexpected surprise” coming from NetherRealm studios.

He didn’t say what it is, obviously, because that would totally take the wind out of the hype-ship’s sails – but he did at least let us know that the announcement had nothing to do with Mortal Kombat 9.

(Protip: that doesn’t preclude another Mortal Kombat – just the latest number 9)

Iiiiinteresting.

The most fun thing to do with developers’ tweets is to go out on a limb to speculate as much as possible – personally, I would love to see something entirely new coming from the studio.

NetherRealm was set up as Warner Bros. Chicago in 2010, after WB acquired the assets for Mortal Kombat, amongst others, from Midway going bankrupt.

Along for the ride came the IPs for Spy Hunter, The Suffering and Wheelman – so really, not cancelling out any other old Midway IPs and assets, it could be anything; but which would be most “unexpected”?

As ever, we’ll keep you posted.
