WoW could lose 1.6 million players to Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars The Old Republic

According to a survey conducted by analyst house Lazard Capital Markets, 1.6 million current World of Warcraft players say they may leave WoW to play Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Even more impressive, the survey found that 50 percent of WoW players plan to buy EA‘s Star Wars themed MMO.

However, we have to wonder just how representative the survey results are, given that it polled just 381 respondents. When you consider that WoW’s active subscriber base is hovering at somewhere near the 10 million mark, the scope of the survey seems quite limited.

33 percent of respondents said that World of Warcraft’s next and fourth expansion pack, Mists of Pandaria, will be incentive for them to resubscribe to the MMO.

Based on the survey Lazard has deduced that WoW could lose as many as 1.6 million players to Star Wars: The Old Republic. Whether the new MMO will hold onto and then grow this market share is an entirely different story.

WoW has seen a decline in its active user base over the past year. It is now sitting at 10.3 million players.
