World of Warcraft turns 7

World of Warcraft

The world’s once most-successful MMO today turns seven years old – which in video game terms makes it a virtual dinosaur.

Officially launched on 25 November 2004, Blizzard‘s MMORPG climbed to over 12 million subscribers, before recently slumping slightly to around 10.3 million and losing it’s top spot to League of Legends.

It was also a hit with critics, earning a 93% Metacritic score and 92% Gamerankings score. This combination of critical success and the fact that the game is one of the most profitable video games ever released makes World of Warcraft one of the most all-around succesful games the world has ever seen.

To-date it has been supported by countless patches and a number of expansion packs: The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm – with The Mists of Pandaria due to be added to the list soon.

To celebrate this special day, Blizzard is offering users a Celebration Package item that includes a tabard for their character – which grants 7% bonus experience and reputation gains while active.

Hip hip! Huzzah!
