[Rumour] Next-gen Xbox to come in two editions

26 November 2011

The Xbox 360 has just edged past six years of age now, and let’s face it, the old girl is getting a little long in the tooth. It’s no wonder then that industry news is stacked with rumour and release date speculation.

The most interesting of these however is the recent whisperings that the new iteration of the Xbox will come in two editions – one for the hardcore gamers, and one for the more casual crowd.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, the casual console will be a “pared down machine”, designed to slash the price as much as possible. This machine will focus primarily on the Kinect gaming experience.

The second edition on the other hand will be everything you’ve expected the new Xbox to be, a fully-featured console with a presumably more advanced hardware suite as well as a hard disk, optical drive and full backwards compatibility. It is believed that this machine, like its casual counterpart, will also come bundled with the Kinect.

As for a release timeframe, that’s still anybody’s guess, and guess they shall, with many speculating an announcement at E3 2012 or CES 2012, and the more optimistic hoping for a Christmas 2012 release. Gaming Nostradamus Michael Pachter however think that any guess not ending in 2014 is way off the mark.
