Mweb launches petition for local console servers

29 November 2011

Watchful MyGaming forumites spotted a petition organized by Mweb which seeks to improve the state of online console gaming in SA.

Console games are particularly badly affected by our lack of infrastructure and distance from globally dispersed gamers, whereas PC gamers often have local dedicated servers which offer relatively lag free gaming.

The petition is therefore specifically pushing for more local console servers.

“Let’s let the voice of the SA console gamer be heard!!” writes Mweb on its Facebook page. “We are tired of high pings playing on international servers when we still pay the full price for the game!”

As a way of singing the petition, Mweb asks that gamers tag themselves in images posted on the Mweb Facebook page.

Exactly what Mweb plans to do with the petition is unclear, but we have fired through some questions to Mweb’s gaming team to find out more.

Mweb already hosts Gears of War 3 servers for Xbox 360 through the deal it has with game hosting platform service GameServers.com.

“We know there are a lot of South African gamers playing Gears of War 3, so we’re really excited about making servers available to GameServers.com. With these servers deployed locally, players will no longer experience the higher latencies associated with connecting to international servers, which should make the game play experience so much better,” said Desmond Kurz, online gaming manager at MWEB.

From the looks of things, the ISP wants to push for more local console game server options, so show your support.
