Consoles are “fundamentally doomed”, says Ultima creator

Ultima creator Richard Garriott de Cayeaux doesn’t see much of a future for game consoles, and where this sentence would usually go on to say how console gaming is holding back PC gaming and blah blah blah, instead this is where the sentence is taking an M Night Shyamalan-class twist – Garriott thinks the future is in mobile gaming.

“I think we might get one more [console] generation, might, but I think fundamentally they’re doomed,” he told IndustryGamers. “I think fundamentally the power that you can carry with you in a portable is really swamping what we’ve thought of as a console.”

He goes on to say that while some games are better suited to console, the mainstream advent of mobile gaming means he’s “now more of a gamer” than ever before. Of course, he would say that because he’s now the boss of social gaming developer Portalarium.

“I play most of my games now on my iPhone and my iPad. In the last two years I’ve found more games that I’ve put way more hours into playing as a player than I have in any other period of my life,” he added.

“So I’m very excited about the new era, I’m a big believer in this new era, but it is very early on in this evolution, so there’s still a lot of work to do.”

So, yeah… but probably not.
